Women Warriors Win to Open Basketball Double-Header

The Nelson Warriors women basketball team secured their third victory of the year 65-54 over the visiting Noble Knights before a lively crowd at Scott Activity Center tonight. Opening the rare basketball double-header, the Warriors trailed by just two points after one quarter, before using a 16-6 run to end the half up double-digits. Makayla Powell had a strong evening, particularly the game's pivotal second quarter in which she put up 9 points. The Warriors continued their strong stretch, pushing the lead to a game-high 14 in the third quarter, but were forced to hold off the charging Knights who themselves used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to five early in the fourth. However, the Knights were never able to come any closer, as Nelson clamped down on their defense, holding Noble to just 8 points on 4-14 shooting.

The victory is yet another signal that the program is heading in the right direction with just five games remaining on their schedule, the Warriors' second in three games, their best stretch of the season. "They looked great out there this evening," said Vice President for Student Development and superfan Kevin Miller. "They played so hard and so well. It was a great fun game to watch."

Nyamisi Havatone led the Warriors with a season-high 18 points on 4-10 from beyond the arc, to go along with 7 rebounds tying Siera Cook for the team-lead. Makayla Powell finished with 16 points capping off a great game that included the stellar second quarter, including an outside shot of her own.

Lirda Ndona of the Knights led all scorers with 21 points, while Kristina Ekofo and Sydnee Lockheart each recorded 12 rebound double-doubles.

The two teams face eachother again in Phoenix at 2pm on Wednesday the 12th.
